Edward C. Summers

August 16, 1908 - February 17,2011

Edward C. Summers, 102, died February, 17, 2011, of complications resulting from a fall in Washington State with his family at his side. Ed was born in Janesville in 1908 to Harry C. and Clara G. Summers. He graduated from Janesville High School in 1927 and got his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1932. He returned home to practice family law in Janesville for over 40 years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 4 years during WWII. He Married Phyllis A. Ransom in 1959 and had a son, Steven, in 1961. In 2004, Ed moved to Bainbridge Island, WA to be near his son’s family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Crosby, and his parents. Ed is survived by his son, Steven (Monique), and 2 grandchildren, Marielle (16), and Niels (12). Ed was lucky to live such a long and healthy life and live in a remarkable period of change. He remembered the first cars on the streets replacing horses in Janesville. He helped form a flying club to build early homemade airplanes (the new technology of his day). He saw the advent of radio, two world wars, TV, the man on the moon, etc. He traveled the world, loved to fish, golf, make furniture and patented a product. He was smart, hardworking, and well loved by his family. He was relatively healthy and sharp until the last month of his life and died in his sleep. He was a lucky man. Services will be held at Henke-Clarson Funeral Home, 1010 N Wright Rd., Janesville, WI Saturday, February, 26, 2011 with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11: 00 a.m. and funeral service at 11:00 with Rev. Forrest Wells of Cargill United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at the Elks Club, 2100 N. Washington Street. Memorials may be made in his honor to The American Cancer Society.
